A BLAST FROM THE PAST
“I’ll never forget that explosive surface strike, nor the long, powerful runs that followed!”
I pulled this halfway decent yellowtail kingfish on a popper and double-handed baitcaster gear from a spot known locally simply as “The Hole”, located off Gerroa, on the NSW south coast. I’ll never forget that explosive surface strike, nor the long, powerful runs that followed!
This amazing little spot was primarily a bait-catching ground, located just a few hundred metres out from the northern corner of Seven Mile Beach, but it produced SO many big kings and jewies (mulloway) through the 1980s and into the early ’90s. Eventually, something changed and the big fish stopped aggregating there regularly in good numbers, although the odd one is still taken by those willing to invest the time.
